"Galatians 6:6 is often left out of lists focused on Jesus’ or the disciples' teachings on giving and charity"
Let’s look at what the verse actually says, what it means in context, and why it may be omitted from many lists.
📖 Galatians 6:6 (NKJV)
"Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches."
✅ What the Verse Really Means (In Context)
Paul is writing to the Galatians to encourage mutual responsibility and support within the body of Christ. In this verse, he’s teaching that those who benefit spiritually (students of the Word) should materially support those who teach them (teachers of the Word).
This is not a command for tithing or mandatory giving. It’s about voluntary support based on gratitude and mutual love within the Christian community.
❓ Why It May Be Omitted from “Giving & Charity” Lists
Not a Direct Teaching of Jesus:
Most lists focus on what Jesus personally taught (e.g., Sermon on the Mount, Good Samaritan, etc.) or the apostolic directives about helping the poor (Acts 2:45, James 1:27, etc.).
Galatians 6:6 is Pauline, and it’s not primarily about charity to the poor but support for ministers.
Not about Giving to the Poor:
The main focus of Christian charity in the Bible is care for the poor, widows, orphans, and strangers.
Galatians 6:6, by contrast, is about supporting ministers, not about general alms giving or social charity.
Easily Misused or Misquoted:
Many prosperity preachers misuse this verse as a tool to pressure poor believers into giving money, often for their own gain.
Because of this abuse, some compilers of verse lists may avoid including it to prevent promoting that misuse.
⚠️ The Danger of Misuse
Indeed, when teachers say things like:
“If you receive a blessing from me, you are obligated to sow a seed into my ministry…”
…they often rip Galatians 6:6 out of context, making it seem like a divine command to give them money.
But Paul never taught manipulative giving. In fact, he worked with his own hands (Acts 20:33–35), and he warned against those who use godliness as a means of gain (1 Timothy 6:5).
🧭 What Jesus Actually Taught About Giving
Jesus consistently emphasized:
Giving without expecting anything in return (Luke 6:35)
Giving in secret (Matthew 6:1–4)
Caring for the poor, sick, and needy (Matthew 25:31–46)
None of Jesus' teachings support coercive giving to religious leaders.
🧩 In Summary
Galatians 6:6 is about voluntary sharing, not manipulation.
It’s not charity to the poor, which is why it’s usually not on charity-themed verse lists.
Misuse by some preachers has cast a shadow over the verse.
The early church promoted support for honest, humble ministers, but never under pressure or guilt.
